The question comes up on every quote, so here is how we think about it.
What a rebuild buys you
The spindle you already have. It fits the machine, the drive is tuned for it, the tool holders match. A replacement that is "equivalent" often still means a mounting adapter, a different connector or a drive parameter change.
Days, not weeks. Our standard turnaround is 3 to 5 working days from receipt, once you have approved the quote. New spindle motors from a European maker can take weeks to arrive unless a distributor happens to have that exact model on the shelf. (We do keep some Perske and Colombo units in stock, and we say so on the product page.)
A known cost before any work starts. Every job begins with a strip-down, an inspection and a written quote. Nothing is replaced until you approve it.
The bearing set you would want anyway. Matched ABEC 7 to ABEC 9 angular-contact bearings from SKF and the German and Italian makers, fitted, run in and dynamically balanced, with a six-month warranty on the repair.
When replacement wins
Some spindles are not worth rebuilding, and we will tell you so in the quote rather than after the invoice:
- A cracked or distorted housing. Bearings need a true, round bore. A housing that has been crashed hard, or run hot enough to move, does not give them one.
- A shaft beyond repair. A bent shaft, or a taper that has been damaged past what can be corrected, means a new rotor assembly. On some models that costs more than a new spindle.
- Windings that have failed on an obsolete model. A rewind is possible on many motors, but on an older model with no parts support the economics can tip.
- A machine that has outgrown the spindle. If the shop has moved to heavier cuts or a different tooling standard, the repair money is better put towards the right spindle.
Doing the sum honestly
Write down four numbers: the quoted repair cost, the price of a new unit, the lead time of each, and what a day of that machine standing still costs you. The last one is usually the biggest, and it is the one people forget. A rebuild that has the machine cutting again on Thursday is worth a great deal more than the price difference suggests.
If you are not sure which side of the line your spindle sits on, send us photos and the nameplate. The inspection is what settles it.
